Sinopsis/Subject :
The International Architecture Workshop (IAW), established in 2016 by the University of Ulsan and Gunadarma University, later joined by Parahyangan Catholic University, has evolved into an important platform for academic and cultural exchange between Korea and Indonesia. Hosted by the University of Ulsan in 2019, the workshop carries the theme Adaptive Environment & Responsive Architecture with the goal of expanding students’ design thinking through collaboration and experimental practice.
This year’s program urges participants to revisit a core but often overlooked idea: architecture as an environmentally responsive shelter. Inspired by philosopher Watsuji Tetsuro’s view on how humans actualize themselves in nature and climate, students are challenged to explore architecture as an expression shaped by environmental conditions.
With Daewangam Park as the study site, the workshop focuses on designing 10–20 guest-house units, community areas, and gardens. It emphasizes natural light, ventilation, materials, and spatial strategies while integrating indigenous wisdom with contemporary technologies. IAW 2019 seeks to inspire creativity, sustainability, and international collaboration.
